Balcairn Complete Cool Mash
Balcairn Complete Cool Mash is suitable for horses prone to laminitis or with insulin dysregulation, as well as horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, commonly known as Cushing’s disease). With approximately 1.7% starch and 1.1% sugar—a combined starch and sugar content of approximately 2.8%—it is below the commonly referenced 10-12% threshold for these horses. Individual requirements vary, so feeding decisions should be made in consultation with a veterinarian or qualified equine nutritionist.
Horses with Cushing’s disease or prone to laminitis need a diet low in starch & sugar. Starch & sugar in feeds & forages cause a horse’s blood insulin to rise after eating and research suggests it is the trigger for most cases of laminitis. Similarly for horses with Cushing’s disease, the blood glucose and insulin spikes more than it should post-feeding, leading to chronically elevated insulin levels. This is a primary driver of laminitis and horses with Cushing’s are therefore more at risk.
These horses require their total diet (including hay and pasture) to be low in sugar and starch, as well as providing quality protein and essential amino acids to allow damaged hoof tissue to repair and aid their comfort. Balcairn Complete Cool Mash provides a low sugar and starch alternative whilst providing high-quality protein and a blend of organic, bio-available trace minerals and vitamins for horses prone to laminitis or those with Cushing’s disease.

Suitability depends on the horse’s individual condition and total diet, including pasture and forage. Consult a veterinarian or qualified equine nutritionist before feeding to horses with laminitis or PPID.
